The FBM Raconteur Bicycles are men’s and women’s urban riding bicycles designed and built in Central New York

The Raconteur’s design combines the aesthetic of vintage English road bikes—the simple lines, small diameter tubing, a single color frame contrasting with polished metal components, a metal head badge, and a leather saddle—with modern materials and manufacturing techniques.

The foundation of the Raconteur bicycles is the tig welded frame and fork handcrafted in the FBM Machine shop in Central New York.  The frame and fork tubing is 100% 4130 chromoly, selected for the right balance of strength, durability and weight. The fork is based on the FBM Sword fixed gear fork but has curved legs for a more comfortable ride.

The components have been carefully selected for quality, purpose and style.  They include existing FBM designed components: Nice nylon platform pedals, Black Heart kraton rubber grips, and the new FBM wood/cork bar ends.  650b size wheels have been chosen for the middle ground they provide between the visual aesthetic of the traditional 26″ wheel and the performance of the current standard 700c road wheel. For the leather saddle there is a choice between either a Brooks B17 or the B66.  The FSA Gimondi crankset have a boxy vintage style that is nearly impossible to find with modern cranksets. Because Velo Orange has a like-minded design aesthetic for their components we chose to include their Grand Cru headset, Belleville handlebars, Diagonale rims, Retro Water Bottle Cage, and stainless steel fenders.

The Options

Both bicycles are being offered as a 2 speed or an 8 speed. The 2 speed uses an automatic shifting coaster hub that allows the bike to maintain a simple look (no cables) which is usually only found on fixed gear frames. The 8 speed provides the larger range of gears one needs for longer rides or rides not on level terrain and uses front and rear caliper brakes for more control.

Step Through City Bike Prototype: Handcrafted

FBM Step Through Raconteur Profile ViewIntroducing the FBM Step Through City Bike prototype.  It is the sister frameset to the FBM City Bike Prototype featured here in April.

Like the City Bike Prototype,  it has a classic design, uses 650b wheels and a Sword fork with additional rake to provide the easy handling you want in a city bike.  It’s tig welded, uses all 4130 Chromoly tubing and is made in the FBM Machine Shop in Johnson City, NY.

Handcrafted: City Bike Prototype

FBM Raconteur Prototype Angle View

We’re working on a new frameset here at FBM and this is the latest prototype.

It’s a city bike; designed for cruising around town on those days you don’t want the aggressive track handling of your Sword.

We wanted the bike to have a classic look so we used a double diamond design for the frame and based the geometry around 650b wheels.  The fork is a Sword fork with curved legs; providing the additional rake needed for the easy handling you want with a city bike. Like all our frames and forks, they are tig welded, use  all 4130 Chromoly tubing, and are made in the FBM Machine Shop in Johnson City, NY.

Look for photos of the bike in action, a final prototype, specs, and options.  We plan to make a limited run of this frameset later in the year.  If you’re interested, contact us so that we can contact you  once production is scheduled.
